- Kitazawa Kikou, age 22, fresh out of college with no idea about what his future should be like. Through his grandfather's connection, he manages to land a job with a architecture firm, while meeting the future boss, his father tells him that he has told the boss about Kikou's little "accident" during high school - namely, stealing a book.
Because of his stealing, his father constantly puts him down. He seeks refuge at a shoe repair shop owned by an old couple, who treats him like a real son and makes Kikou feel more at home than at his own house. He also meets a bar hostess who becomes his girlfriend. His grandfather is a retired judge with a girlfriend half his father's age. His mother is a housewife with a determination to ruin all the men of the household. And his father spends more time with the wife and son of his deceased friend than his own family.
Each men of the Kitazawa household has a "shotaku", a home away from home. The story follows these three men as each of them experience the loss of their shotaku. The grandfather's lover dies of a brain hemorage, the friend's wife remarries, and the shoe repair shop closes and Kikou's girlfriend disappears. Through a whole series of events, the three men of the Kitazawa household learn to live and forgive and start anew.
