  • Road to Dawn is the first movie that Lee has made in Malaysia. The Chinese historical drama is based on the story of Dr Sun Yat Sen’s revolutionary efforts and his love affairs while he was in Penang in 1910. The 125-minute movie features the famous Penang Conference, during which the Second Guang Zhou Uprising was mapped out.

The movie was filmed in various locations in Penang between Aug 3 and Sept 10 last year. There was no need for the use of studio or sets in this production as the settings and streetscapes in Penang, reminiscent of that era, have remained unchanged. Road to Dawn has won accolades at the 10th Shanghai International Film Festival. It grabbed the Media’s Choice Award, with Winston Chao winning the most popular actor award for his powerful portrayal of Dr Sun Yat Sen, and Wu Yue, the newcomer award for her sensitive rendition of Chen Cui Fen.
