Ya-da often thinks: the girl who sells matches is quite pathetic and she felt sorry for herself when she saw happy family scenes as she stood in the outdoor that was covered with thick snow; she should have felt better if she saw how his family lived.

Ya-da is in the fifth grade of Ming Ri Elementary School. His father, Chung Shin Ni, is always absent from home and busy working. His mother, Mei Mang Wu, constantly changes her jobs. Therefore, Ya-da has become quite independent. He has been doing poorly in his academic performance. In addition, he often misses his meals. He often eats instant noodles for his meals; however, he thinks there is a positive side in it. Eating instant noodles would make him think that a decent, regular meal tastes quite good and would not make him finicky. In addition, no dishes need to be washed after eating instant noodles.

Ya-da does not like Chinese New Year Holidays because he saw his grandfather trying to kill his father with an army knife on his first Chinese New Year Holidays. After that, his father has been often absent from home. On the eve of this year's New Year Day, the police visited his home and asked his family to look at a corpse that could be his father's.

Though many bad things have taken place, he wishes that he will have a happy family and future. Though his mother can not make a lot of money, she still loves him. Though his father rarely comes home, his father can do a lot of things and loves him. His grandfather and grandmother have been bickering with each other on a daily basis. His aunt, who is somewhat silly and foolish, has been dating with bad guys. In addition, there is a bum who wants to be his adoptive father. He also has a lot of interesting classmates. All these people have played a part in his life.

If there is belief, there will be hope.
