  • Adapted from the seminal novel by Nobel laureate Mo Yan that also inspired Zhang Yimou's 1987 film, drama epic Reg Sorghum features Zhou Xun in her first television role in a decade. The series, directed by the much-lauded Zheng Xiaolong (Empresses In The Palace), tells the story of Jiu Er (Zhou Xun), whom at the age of 19 is sold by her father to be the wife of the leprosy son of a liquor seller. During her journey to her new home, Jiu Er is nearly kidnapped by a bandit, but is rescued by the brash Yu Zhan Ao (Zhu Yawen). The two embark on an illicit affair, and together, they must contend with one hardship after another, including the Japanese invasion of their homeland...
